The Kardashev Scale

What it means to become
a Type 1 Civilisation.

In 1964, Soviet astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev proposed a framework for measuring a civilisation's technological advancement by its ability to harness energy. The scale has three types.

Planetary Civilisation
Controls and uses all energy sources available on its home planet. Manages all weather, geological events, and planetary resources. No war over resources. No tragedy of the commons.

Controls energy at a galactic scale. Colonises and manages entire galaxies. Manipulates fundamental physics. Essentially godlike in capability.

At our current rate of progression, reaching Type I is estimated to take 100 to 200 years. The biggest blocker is not energy generation. We already produce enough. The biggest blocker is resource coordination failure at a planetary scale.

The collective outcome is destruction. The only way out is a coordination mechanism all parties trust. In 1968, that was philosophically impossible. In 2026, it is not.
